||Prof. CNR Rao, Bharat Ratna, has straddled the scientific landscape of the country (and the areas of structural and materials chemistry, worldwide) like a colossus, publishing over 1600 research papers in a career spanning nearly six decades and being decorated with many forms of national and international recognition for his work. He obtained his bachelors’ degree from Mysore University in 1951, a masters’ degree in chemistry from the Banaras Hindu University in 1953, and a PhD from Purdue University in 1958, at the age of twenty-four.
