Quantitative experiments to understand Prokaryotic and Eukaryotic Chemotaxis

Abstract:Chemotaxis, the movement of cells guided by chemical gradients, plays an important role in many biological processes including tumor dissemination, wound healing, and embryogenesis. The presentation will be divided into three parts, such as chemotaxis of the prokaryotic cells, chemotaxis of the eukaryotic cells, and application of chemotaxis to detect antibiotic susceptible cells, and also cell-substrate adhesion of neutrophil cells. In the first part, quantitative experiments to understand prokaryotic chemotaxis will be discussed. The response of E. coli to varying concentrations and gradient of attractants and repellents and the rheological response of a suspension of E. coli will also be discussed. The second part will cover the topic such as investigate the chemotactic behavior of Dictyostelium discoideum (eukaryotic cells) in microfluidic devices and establish the cellular memory in presence of attractant. Finally, in the third part, future work will be discussed. The topic of the future work will be divided into two parts. The first topic is ‘Low cost, rapid detection for antibiotic susceptibility of bacteria using Lab-on-a-chip designs that exploit chemotactic responses’. Antibiotic resistance is a growing concern across the world, including India and I will discuss how to develop a rapid lab-on-a-chip microfluidic device capable of detecting antibiotic susceptibility of bacteria. Also in future work, Cell-cell and cell-substrate adhesion during migration of eukaryotic cells such as neutrophil cells will be discussed.
