Abstract: This pedagogical lecture will introduce why spintronics (spin-based electronics) is exciting from, both, fundamental and application perspectives. The talk shall also present the fundamentals of interface physics between a metallic non-magnetic and magnetic material that acts as a driving platform for several exciting spintronic effects such as spin-pumping and spin-orbit torque effect. Various techniques for growth, physical and electronic structure characterization, spin and magnetization, dynamics of thin films, heterostructures, and interfaces will also be discussed. Examples will be employed to demonstrate how the electronic and physical structure vis-a-vis spin dynamics correlation can be used to develop efficient spintronic platforms.
