Immunology and Immunopathology
Research Interests
The focus of research in Dr Sehrawat’s lab is investigating immunity and immunopathology to infectious agents. His laboratory has generated therapeutic single domain antibodies or nanobodies for managing public health problems such as snake bites, infection of viruses (dengue virus, corona virus), antimicrobial resistant (AMR) bacteria such as methicillin resistant Staphylococuss aureus (MRSA), pathogenic E. coli using an in-house constructed phage display library. They have then extensively characterised and modified these antibodies to enhance their therapeutic value by generating bivalent and bispecific antibodies. Such products showed promising value in blocking infection and improving the outcome of disease when tested in animal model/s. Given the future need to manage health problems in the aging population, his group has discovered Rab8a, a small GTPase, as a novel key regulator of dysfunctional dendritic cells (DCs) of the aging host. Furthermore, they have demonstrated that a genetic reconstitution of aged DCs with Rab8a enhanced their lost functions and promoted anti-viral immunity. Such an approach would also be valuable for achieving favourable outcome of malignancies using cell based therapies. They have also demonstrated the utility of several approaches which promoted the response of virus-specific memory cytotoxic T lymphocytes, a desirable outcome of vaccination.
