Abstract: The talk will discuss viral infections where lesions are the consequence of immunopathological reactions to the virus. However, usually in such circumstances only some components of the host immune response are causing the lesions, whereas other ongoing immune activities will be acting to counteract the damage process. We argue that if the ways can be found to rebalance the involvement of different immune activities, lesion resolution will occur. We describe various ways of achieving this objective focusing on the value of metabolic reprogramming, the major topic of the speaker’s own research at the time he recently closed his research laboratory. He sincerely thanks his 80 trainees, some of whom were outstanding Indian colleagues, as well as support for >45 years by the National Institutes of Health. USA
