Abstract: I will talk about studies we performed to investigate the atomic properties of Caesium (Cs) isolated and trapped in cryogenic Inert Gas crystals such as Argon (Ar), Krypton (Kr), and ortho-Deuterium (oD2); a technique broadly known as Matrix Isolation Spectroscopy. The principal motivation to study these kinds of systems primarily comes from their potential as platforms for high-precision measurements, relevant to the hunt for signatures of physics beyond the Standard Model. Here, we focus on the search for permanent Electric Dipole Moments (EDMs) of fundamental particles. I will start by introducing EDMs in the language of Quantum Field Theory and highlight some of their important properties.

For the experiment, demonstration of effective state preparation and precise optical control is monumental towards the success of high-precision measurement schemes. To that end, it is important to understand and characterize the spectrum of Cs embedded in Inert Gas crystals. We perform spectroscopic studies in the visible and near-infrared range to identify trapping environments, lattice effects, and to characterize electronic transitions within the trapped atoms. In the next stage, we plan to perform radio & microwave measurements to study the Cs hyperfine structure, complemented with simulations to understand the anisotropies introduced by the trapping environment.
