About the Speaker:
Sreerup Raychaudhuri is a theoretical particle physicist. A Ph.D. from the University of Calcutta (1994), he completed postdoctoral stints at TIFR (1994-96) and CERN (1996-98) before joining the faculty of the IIT Kanpur (1999-2007). He then moved to TIFR (2007-24) where he served as Professor and also Dean (Administration). After retiring from TIFR, he is now Professor of Theoretical Physics at the Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Varanasi, as well as Director of the Bharat Kala Bhavan, the campus museum of BHU. Apart from his scientific research, he has wide-ranging interests and is particularly focussed on popularisation of science and the history of science.
Abstract:
This talk will trace the story of elementary particle physics from the point when it began to separate out of nuclear physics to the great discoveries of the later twentieth century and the establishment of the Standard Model. The present status of particle physics will then be examined and various possible scenarios for the future introduced and discussed. The focus will be entirely on ideas, discoveries and methods rather than math or technicalities.
