Abstract: Abstract: Astronomical observations, theoretical models, and hydrodynamical simulations suggest that galaxies are surrounded by a halo of diffuse gas extending far beyond the central stellar disk. Known as the circumgalactic medium (CGM), this ‘galactic atmosphere’ is believed to play a central role in galaxy evolution through the ‘baryon cycle’: it not only harbours gas previously ejected from galaxies by feedback processes -- including recycling or fountain flows -- but also serves as the interface through which accreting material from larger scales must pass.

The interplay of these processes gives rise to a highly complex phase structure within the CGM: while most of its volume is filled by hot, X-ray emitting gas (T>10^6 K), significantly cooler clouds -- by factors of ~100–1000 -- are embedded within. This raises a number of fundamental questions: how can gas at such disparate temperatures coexist? What physical mechanisms generate and sustain this multiphase structure? How does the CGM evolve over cosmic time, and how does it regulate the growth of galaxies?

In this talk, I will discuss recent progress in understanding the CGM and its connection to galactic growth, with a particular focus on insights gained from large-volume cosmological (magneto-)hydrodynamical simulations, which provide a powerful framework for probing these complex gaseous reservoirs.

About the Speaker: Rahul is a postdoctoral researcher at the Kavli Institute for the Physics and Mathematics of the Universe (Kavli IPMU) in Tokyo, Japan. Prior to this, he completed his PhD at the Institut für Theoretische Astrophysik in Heidelberg, Germany. His research focuses on the circumgalactic medium (CGM) surrounding galaxies, which he studies using large cosmological magneto-hydrodynamical simulations. He completed his BS-MS at IISER Mohali in 2021.
