International Workshop on Critical Geographies of the Himalayan Region

International Workshop on Critical Geographies of the Himalayan Region held at IISER Mohali on October 07-08, 2016.

International Workshop on Critical Geographies of the Himalayan Region held at IISER Mohali on October 07-08, 2016.
International workshop on ’Learning from the Utopian City’ was held at IISER Mohali from February 28th and 29th, 2016. The workshop brought together Indian and international academics, policy makers, bureaucrats, urban activists and NGOs on the same platform to deliberate upon the contested histories and imagined futures for the city of Chandigarh. Ideas of Chandigarh as a ’heritage city’ and as ’a smart city’ were examined. The workshop was part of a larger series of workshops conducted in India (at Varanasi, Navi Mumbai and Nashik) and a conference at the University of Leeds, UK. They were part of a project on Utopian Cities funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), UK and Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR). Dr. Anu Sabhlok is the India PI for this project and Dr. Ayona Datta (University of Leeds) is the UK PI.

The Conference on Nonlinear systems and dynamics organized by Prof. Sudeshna Sinha and Prof. Somdatta Sinha during March 13-15, 2015 was the ninth of a very successful conference series, organized periodically with a view to bring together researchers with overlapping interests in nonlinear dynamics on a single platform and foster exchange and collaboration among the young and senior researchers who work in areas spanning a wide range of disciplines that use the language and tools of nonlinear dynamics. CNSD-2015 drew around 150 participants. There were 17invited talks from leading active researchers from around India, as well as a couple from Germany, one from Japan and one from USA. There were 38 contributed talks, which ran in parallel sessions, and 50 poster presentations.
The themes encompassed integrable systems and solitons, Hamitonian chaos, quantum chaos, time delay systems, non smooth dynamical systems, dynamics of patterns, synchronization and coupled systems, fractals and multifractals, time series analysis, networks, nonlinear dynamics in engineering sciences, nonlinear phenomena in astrophysics, complex biological systems, plasma and magnetohydrodynamics, nonlinear optics and chemical kinetics.
The participants of CNSD15 appreciated the scientific content and ambience of the meeting. The conference had very high scientific level, very good presentations and a novel aspect that was much appreciated was the participation of people even from Biology and engineering.
>The first Instructional School on Mathematical & Computational Biology (ISMCB-1) was organized by the Mohali node of the SERB supported National Network of Mathematical & Computational Biology (NNMCB) from May 15 to 29, 2014 at IISER Mohali, Punjab. The coordinator of the school was Prof. Somdatta Sinha.
>This school aimed to provide the basic framework required to understand and work in the highly interdisciplinary field of Mathematical and Computational Biology. Thirty-two undergraduate and graduate students, and three college teacher participants were chosen who came from Physics, Mathematics, Biology, and Engineering disciplines. Speakers were chosen from both academia and industry.Unlike focused courses on specific methods or biological area, the format of the school aimed to enable students to get a wide overview, along with some in-depth knowledge, of few common methods.
>After a few preliminary classes on Biology and Linear Algebra, to help people from different backgrounds come to a common level, there were few general overview talks on Bioinformatics and biological data. Four short courses on methods and applications of Differential Equations, Graphs Theory. Stochastic Processes, and Time Series Analysis were conducted with classroom lectures and hands-on computational labs. During the last four days there were long talks, starting from basics to an advanced level, on Neurobiology, Structural Biology, Molecular machines, Mathematical modelling of electrical activity, Machine Learning Methods, and Modeling in Pharmaceutical Research.
The Discussion Meeting on Group Theory sponsored by the National Board of Higher Mathematics was organized by Dr. Krishnendu Gangopadyay and Dr. Mahender Singh at IISER Mohali during May 08 - 11th, 2014.
The conference had a total of 31 participants (14 faculty, 17 students ) from different parts of the country. The aim of this meeting was to bring together group theorists in India, and hold discussions on several aspects of modern day research on the topic. Emphasis of the meeting was on finite and computational group theory. However, some topics in geometric group theory, representation theory and related topics were also included. The discussion provided up to date information of current themes of research in group theory. A novel feature of the meeting were special sessions on GAP (Groups, Algorithms, and Programming) software that has been proven to be an essential computational tool in understanding of groups. Main topics that were covered in the meeting were: Representations of finite groups, Automorphisms of p-groups, Conjugacy classes and their generalizations, Group rings, GAP.
